Chancellor of Mumbai University and Governor of Maharashtra, Mr. Vidyasagar Rao dismissed the Vice Chancellor of MU, Mr. Sanjay Deshmukh for his negligence in implementing the On Screen Assessment process in an effective way. According to the Chancellor, Mr. Deshmukh is primarily responsible for the results mess this year.

Following this decision, in the interim, the Vice Chancellor of Shivaji University (Kolhapur), Mr. Devanand Shinde will additionally hold his post as the Acting Vice Chancellor as the appointment of a new VC for Mumbai University may take some time.

An official statement in this regard was released by the Chancellor of Mumbai University in which it was stated that Mr. Sanjay Deshmukh failed in different aspects of his job to ensure implementation of the new assessment system as well as the declaration of Mumbai University results. The results were to be declared in summer 2017 whereas the varsity was able to complete the entire assessment process only in September 2017 after continuous pressure that was built on it by higher authorities.

Not only the delay in the announcement, results of many students were put on hold due to untraceable or missing answer sheets. This had further caused panic and stress among the students who were waiting for the result so that they could apply for higher studies in India as well as abroad. Clearly, Deshmukh seemed to have failed to comply with the directions and guidelines issued by Mumbai University Chancellor.

According to Section 11(14) E of the Maharashtra Public Universities Act, the Chancellor of the varsity has the power to dismiss or remove the existing VC if he/she fails to comply with norms or fails to carry out the responsibilities assigned to him/her.

The forceful removal of a VC had never happened in Mumbai University in the last two decades. In August 2017, students staged a protest demanding the resignation of VC, which was also supported by a few political parties.
