Mumbai University is set to lose its Grade ‘A’ accreditation from NAAC or National Assessment and Assessment Council from April 20, 2017. However, the NAAC Committee of the varsity decided to seek an extension on the grade from NAAC. The varsity wants to continue with the same grade until it reapplies with the body.

Mumbai University was given ‘A’ grade accreditation from National Assessment and Accreditation Council in the year 2012. Usually, the NAAC score is valid for five years. The varsity failed to reapply for the accreditation and it will lose grade from April 20, 2017.

Chairperson of Mumbai University’s NAAC Committee, Prof. Neeraj Hatekar expressed that NAAC grade is essential to define the quality status of the institute. The committee did not want to reapply for NAAC accreditation as the Council was revising its guidelines for assessing the higher educational institutes. Therefore, the varsity wishes that NAAC accreditation is given as per the new norms. If the varsity applies for NAAC reaccreditation now, the Council would assess the institute as per old norms.

Mr. M.A. Khan, Registrar of Mumbai University was of the opinion that the new norms are expected to bring more transparency in the assessment process. The new norms are likely to come into effect in a couple of months and the varsity will apply for reaccreditation then.

However, to avoid the stoppage of grants from University Grants Commission, the varsity decided to write to NAAC seeking an extension of accreditation. Until, the NAAC grants extension, the varsity will not get financial grants from the government.
