To attract the attention of pilgrims towards its certificate course in Sikh studies, Nalanda Open University (NOU) plans to put up a big banner at Patna Railway Junction during the celebration of Prakashotsava - 350th birth anniversary of Guru Gobind Singh.

NOU is the lone university in India to offer Sikh studies certificate course of six months duration. Ras Bihari Prasad Singh, Vice-Chancellor of NOU said that he has sought the permission of district administration for putting up such banners at several important road crossings across the city. But NOU would not be able to pay the required money for that.

The University is likely to submit a proposal report to UGC's Distance Education Bureau (DEB) for sanctioning a development grant of INR 9.33 crore during the present financial year. Its executive council (syndicate) had approved the proposal at its meeting on Sunday 20 December 2016 held under the chairmanship of the vice-chancellor of the university.

The meeting was attended several dignitaries like:

  • R P Upadhyaya, NOU pro-VC
  • Khalid Mirza, State higher education director
  • Dharamshala Prasad, Patna College principal
  • K N Paswan, head of the geography department Patna University

The University plans for converting its open and distance learning (ODL) system from present conventional one to the information and communication technology (ICT) driven system for which the university needs INR 1.47 crores and 1.96 crores for the development of its course materials.

The registrar of the university SP Sinha said that the University is running more than 100 courses starting from certificate to postgraduate level. It has an enrolment of 1.25 lakh students. This around 26,000 new students have enrolled in the university and they are getting lessons at 157 study centres in different parts of the country.
