National Mathematics Day 2023: Remembering Srinivasa Ramanujan, Significance
S. Ramanujan was one of the greatest mathematicians in India as well as around the world and his birthday is now celebrated as National Mathematics Day. Here is all you need to know about him on National Mathematics Day 2023.
National Mathematics Day 2023: As the educational institutes, schools, and scholars of the country dedicate this day to Mathematics, let’s just know why is it so. One of the brightest minds of India, Srinivasa Ramanujan was born today on December 22, 1887, in Erode, Mysore (present-day Karnataka). Ramanujan was a master of numbers who always imagined calculating the impossible like infinity. His contribution to the Infinite Series, Number Theory, and Mathematical Analysis is a pioneer in Mathematical Discoveries to date.
Although he never received formal schooling, especially in advanced mathematics, he still gave some notable theorems that were considered unsolvable until that time. He was working as a lower clerk at one of the sari shops in his nearby town. He began postal correspondence with Professor G.H.Hardy, one of the biggest mathematicians in the world at that time. Prof. Hardy used to teach at the University of Cambridge in England. One of the first problems he posed in his journal that was locally published was the square root of the sum of the squares of an infinite series. This was a groundbreaking discovery at that time. Professor Hardy always considered Ramanujan as an important mathematician that the world will ever get.
Some of Ramanujan’s theorems are still a mystery to the mathematic academia in the world. One of his most notable contributions was the Ramanujan Number, 1729, which is the smallest number that is expressible as the sum of two cubes in two different ways. Ramanujan’s work towards the infinite series and the calculation of infinite numbers still fascinates mathematicians.
He left the world on April 26, 1920, at the mere age of 32 leaving behind a legacy to be remembered till infinite time. Recognising his work in the field, the government of India announced December 22 to be celebrated as the National Mathematics Day every year since 2011.
