National University of Juridical Sciences (NUJS), Kolkata Launches Course on Harry Potter
NUJS, Kolkata has launched a course on Harry Potter which will offer students a chance to explore the legal aspects of the Harry Potter novel. The name of the course is An Interface between Fantasy Fiction Literature and Law: Special Focus on Rowling’s Potterverse.
Potter enthusiasts can look forward to a new course at the National University of Juridical Sciences (NUJS) in Kolkata. The varsity has launched a course on Harry Potter which will offer students a chance to explore the legal aspects of the Harry Potter novel.
The name of the course is 'An Interface between Fantasy Fiction Literature and Law: Special Focus on Rowling’s Potterverse'. It will be offered as an elective course to the 4th and 5th year students of the B.A. LL.B (Hons.) course.
Assistant Professor, Shouvik Kumar Guha has designed the programme in such a way that so that students could get a chance to study something exciting apart from the orthodox law school syllabus.
According to him, the new course is more of an experiment which will enable students to think out of the box. Most of the law schools offer students with very specific subjects and there is nothing exciting about them. This course will break the monotony and students will learn to apply legal principles and aspects in a completely new scenario.
It will also provide them with an insight into the wizarding world. He added that the main agenda is to help students apply their legal knowledge to a completely unknown scenario.
He also cited many such examples from books. One such example is the Prisoner of Azkaban which is designed in such a manner that it drives inmates to despair without any hope of reformation. Many other instances like wealth control, government policy will help students apply their knowledge in practice. This will provide students with a platform to compare the legal scenarios with their own government.

Also, the assignments that will be given to the students of this elective will be very creative and different than the usual ones. The classes will begin in December and it is not the first time that the Harry Potter books have been used by the professors to make learning more interesting.

Earlier in 2012, Rashmi Raman started a Potterverse-centric elective law programme at the Jindal Global Law School which gained a lot of popularity among law students.
