NCERT Panel Recommends to Replace 'India' with 'Bharat' in Textbooks

The NCERT (National Council of Educational Research and Training) panel on Wednesday, October 5 2023 recommended replacing the “India'' with “Bharat''. C I Issac, the committee chairman, has also said that the panel recommends introducing classical history textbooks instead of ancient history. As per the chairman during colonial British rule history was divided into ancient, medieval and modern. Issac points out that ancient history lacks in showcasing scientific awareness and highlights more of darkness.

The seven-member panel also recommended introducing the Indian Knowledge System (IKS) curriculum in the updated NCERT TextBooks. The term India was commonly known and used among people after the establishment of the East India Company and the term India was used back to 5000 years. Keeping these aspects in consideration the seven-member panel recommended the use of Bharat instead of India in all the Textbooks of NCERT. Soon NCERT will be rolling out a detailed notification on the change in the name of India to Bharat.
The development of changing the name to Bharat comes after the Indian Government was using Bharat during the G 20 Summit. The term Bharat was used in the presidential dinner which was held in the month of September. The term Bharat was used in the Name Plate of the Indian President and Prime Minister.
