On September 22, 2017, the Supreme Court will hear plea with regard to the third round counselling process to fill up the vacant medical and surgical seats in medical colleges across the country. According to sources, more than 500 seats are vacant in the super speciality courses in the medical colleges.

Dr. Senthil Nandan, with the support of 25 members, filed a petition requesting the apex court to give approval for the third round counselling process earlier this week. The petitioner pointed that over 25% seats remain vacant even after the second round counselling process after which an additional round of counselling shall be conducted so that more students in the order of merit can secure a seat in the super speciality courses.

NEET score is the main criterion for the admission in MCh (surgery) and medicine (DM) courses. The Medical Council of India (MCI) conducted the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for Super Speciality courses (NEET-SS) on June 10, 2017. The results of the same were announced on July 15, 2017. The first round counselling process for super speciality courses took place in August to fill 1,140 seats.

The petitioner argued that the counselling committee displayed the list of vacant seats in super speciality courses as 1,969. However, in reality, only 1,141 seats were available for the first round. After the first round, over 250 seats remained vacant due to non-reporting, claimed the petitioner.

The petitioner further argued that over 828 seats were not offered during the counselling process since Andhra Pradesh and Telangana did not disclose the details of vacant seats. These seats were only offered in the second round counselling as per the instructions of the top court.
