NEET 2017 Age Limit Verdict Adjourned by SC

The final verdict on age limit controversy of NEET has been adjourned by the Supreme Court. The verdict will now be announced on Monday, March 20.

The Medical Council of India (MCI) presented its argument in front of a bench comprising Justices Dipak Misra and R. Banumathi, who announced a new date. Prior to this, the decision was postponed by the court from February 23 to February 27.

The Allahabad High Court was supposed to announce its verdict on February 27 in line with the SC’s decision but has postponed its verdict to February 28.

In the court proceedings, the MCI was asked whether any provision for upper age limit existed in the Acts governing NEET or if any such amendment had been rightfully introduced. In its reply to the SC, MCI mentioned that there is no such provision for the time being but will soon be introduced. The council also informed the court that the upper age limit was implemented under the guidelines of CBSE.

According to the guidelines of CBSE issued on January 31, 2016, the upper age limit for NEET 2017 will be fixed at 25 years for general candidates and 30 years for reserved category students.

Prior to this, the upper age limit criteria was only applicable for the 15% all-India quota seats. Students had objected the rule and stated that it was unfair to apply age bar for a certain section of students only.
