On September 12, 2017, the High Court of Madras sought a response from the state government on the steps that are being taken to regulate tragedies connected with the most debated National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). The court directed the state government to file the response by September 14, 2017. The court further expressed its concern over Anitha's suicide, a 17-year old medical aspirant due to medical admission norms implemented by the centre. Know the Latest News and Updates on NEET 2017!

On August 24, 2017, Justice N. Kribakaran directed the TN government to conduct counselling sessions for the students who failed to clear NEET-UG 2017 in Tamil Nadu. The court also advised the state government to rope in renowned personalities and psychologists to prevent students who failed in NEET from taking extreme steps. The court also informed the state government to set up coaching centres for training rural students for upcoming NEET exam next year.

From the past two weeks, Tamil Nadu has been surrounded with massive protests. Students took to streets in Chennai and Coimbatore raising slogans against NEET. They also demanded the central government to scrap NEET mandate from the next session. Further, last week, students in Coimbatore boycotted their classes while the lawyers boycotted the district courts and demanded the centre to scrap NEET.

Centre’s decision to conduct medical admissions based on NEET merit in Tamil Nadu is the root cause of all the protests and problems across the state. AIADMK party also went on to protest against NEET on September 9, 2017.
