Bharati Pravin Pawar, the Minister of State in the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, mentioned in the parliament on March 15, 2023 that under their constituency, a surge of 97% in MBBS seats has been witnessed. The no. of seats in medical colleges has risen to 1,01,043 as of now from 51,348 which was before 2014. Out of the available seats now, 52,778 seats are available in government medical colleges while the remaining 48,265 seats are available in private medical colleges.

The honorable minister further added that there has been an increase of 71% in total medical colleges from 387 which was before 2014 to 660 as of now. This gives students better chances to score higher marks and secure a seat in the college of their choice.

One must note that additionally, a surge of 110 percent in PG seats has been recorded from 31,185 before 2014 to 65,335 as of now. The breakdown of the seats comprises 13,246 Diplomate of National Board (DNB), as well as Fellowship of National Board (FNB) PG seats along with a total of 1621 PG seats which are available at the College of Physicians and Surgeons (CPS).

Subsequently, the Dept. of Medical Education, Uttar Pradesh, announced a further addition of 1,300 new MBBS seats in its medical colleges which are managed by the state government. A total of 13 new medical colleges is set to commence from the 2023-24 academic year.
