The AIADMK leader, Mr. Navneet Krishna while speaking in Rajya Sabha termed The Indian Medical Council (Amendment) Bill, 2016 and The Dentists (Amendment) Bill, 2016 as ‘illegal and unconstitutional’. He opined that the amendments will have a negative effect on rural students who do not follow CBSE syllabus.

The bill which has been already passed in Lok Sabha which provides Constitutional Status to NEET which is intended to be conducted from the next academic year.

Mr. Naveneet Krishna mentioned that the students of Tamil Nadu will be affected by NEET. He asserted that there isn’t any necessity for this bill as the entire issue is under judicial review.

Mr. Narendra Budania of Congress appreciated the efforts of Union Health Minister, Mr. JP Nadda for carrying out common entrance test which was an idea of previous UPA government. However, he opined that the private colleges must be properly monitored so that the ‘pure profession becomes purer’.

Mr. Naresh Agarwal of Samajwadi Party asked the minister to be bold and take full control of Medical Council of India rather than dividing it into four parts. He supported the bills. He opined that Doctors passing out from medical colleges must serve in the rural areas for a period of five years. This will help to check the quality of education provided in medical colleges.

Mr. Sharad Yadav of JD-U supported the bills and mentioned that it’s a good step which is taken by the government to conduct simultaneous medical exam across the country. He cited that the conditions of government medical colleges were far better than their private counterparts. He also expressed dissatisfaction as no member of Rajya Sabha raised an issue regarding donations in medical colleges.

He mentioned that the government must end the system of donation. Some of the people who have black money were opening medical and engineering colleges. the medical education system in India has been ruined because of the donation system.

Ani Desai of Shiva Sena Party said that there has to be uniformity in the syllabus for NEET. Mr. Praful Patel of NCP supported the bill and opined that the medical colleges in India are very less and there is a need for the establishment of more medical colleges.

All the other parties like BJD, BJP, BSP and TDP supported the bill. It was only AIADMK which did not support the bill. The bill got accepted by Rajya Sabha through Voice Vote.
