NEET 2020: More than 21 Candidates to Fight for 1 MBBS Seat this Year

For NEET 2020, over 21 students will be competing for one MBBS seat in India, as data shows nearly 16 lakh students registered for the exam. The increase in numbers is due to the scrapping of AIIMS MBBS and JIPMER entrance exams, which were being conducted until last year.

With the closure of the NEET 2020 Application Form submission on 6th January 2020 and the NEET application form correction form beginning from 15th Jan 2020, data has been released claiming the number of students that will compete for one MBBS seat in India.

As per the data shared by the National Testing Agency, the body responsible for conducting NEET 2020, there has been a total of 15,93,452 candidates who have registered themselves for the exam. The numbers suggest that there will be over 21 candidates competing for one MBBS seat in India, thus increasing the competition even more.

The Centre had decided that all the medical colleges in India will be enrolling students based on the scores or rank obtained in the NEET 2020 exam. Till last year, AIIMS and JIPMER conducted their own entrance exams for their institutions across India. From the 2020-21 academic year, all admissions will be taken based on NEET 2020.

Union Minister Harsh Vardhan shared data that displays figures pertaining to the number of MBBS seats available in India for medical aspirants. The data shows nearly 75,000 MBBS seats currently available in India for those aspirants who qualify the exam. Sources state that the data has been referred from the 17th Lok Sabha’s first parliament session, which had been held between 17th June - 16th July 2019.

The overall increase in the number of students competing for one MBBS seat in the country also means that the percentage of applications received has also risen. Compared to last year, there has been almost a 15% increase in the number of candidates who have been registered. While there had been only 15 lakh students registered for the exam, this year the number has increased to almost 16 lakh candidates.

The high number of applications and the increasing number of applications over the year proves the high competitiveness of the exam. Over the past year, the centre has tried to set up various government medical colleges across the different states in the country. However, the number of MBBS seats are not enough to reduce the competitiveness of the exam.
