With the National Medical Commission Bill on the verge of being passed, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has stated that the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) will not be abolished or removed. The statement had been made by the Junior Health Minister, Ashwini Kumar Choubey while responding to a question asked in the Upper House.

The Junior Minister further added that the rules and regulations outlined by the Medical Council of India (MCI) and the National Medical Commission (NMC), as well as the Supreme Court rulings, authorises a National Level Entrance Exam. The NEET examination qualifies this requirement and also increases the transparency and reduces the burden on aspiring medical students on preparing for different entrance tests.

Health Ministry states that Section 10 D of the Indian Medical Council Act 1956, defines that a uniform medical entrance test, under the alias of National Eligibility cum Entrance Test shall be conducted to offer admissions to Medical Colleges in India for both undergraduate and postgraduate medical courses. This regulation had been made compulsory all across the nation, with no exception.

In the words of the Junior Health Minister, the NEET examination has been able to assure a minimum standard of medical education in India while also enhancing its quality. More importantly, NEET has been able to reduce and in certain cases remove malpractices in medical admissions across India, stated the minister. He added that the exam has also brought in a greater scale of transparency and has also reduced the burden on all medical aspirants.
