Ahead of NEET-UG 2017 counselling process, the state government of Punjab has doubled the reservation for backward classes from 5% to 10% in all government medical and dental colleges. The registration process for counselling for the medical and dental courses will begin on July 17, 2017.

The candidates belonging to General category expressed their disappointment over the decision of state government and claimed that it may reduce their chances of getting admission in government medical and dental colleges. Therefore, few aspirants have threatened the state government that they will move to court if the government does not roll back the decision. Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS) issued an official notification on July 6, 2017, confirming the 10% reservation for backward students in medical and dental courses at government medical and dental colleges.

As soon as students and parents became aware of the decision, they reached BFUHS and demanded the varsity to roll back the decision. A parent expressed that the state government must also consider the interest of students belonging to general category. Already, there are many reservations for backward classes, and it is not fair to double the reservation. Things will become worse for the General category students with the increase of BC quota reservation.

Parents contacted the VC of BFUHS and he clarified that the varsity has no role to decide the reservation policy except to follow the instructions of the state government. Therefore, the candidates belonging to backward classes will now have 10% of reservation instead of 5% in MBBS and BDS courses.
