NEET UG Supreme Court Hearing on Grace Marks 2024: The Ministry of Education on June 13 informed the Supreme Court of India to cancel the “grace marks” awarded to 1,563 students in the May 5 NEET UG examination. As per NEET UG Supreme Court order, these 1,563 students will be notified of their actual scores i.e., their scores without the award of grace marks. A re-examination for these candidates will be conducted. It will tentatively be held on June 23, 2024. NTA is likely to notify the schedule for NEET 2024 re-exam on June 13 or 14.

However, if these candidates wish to retain their May 5 examination score, they may not appear for the re-exam. The results of the re-exam will likely be declared on June 30. NEET UG 2024 counselling that is scheduled to start on July 6 will then continue uninterrupted, read the NEET UG Supreme Court judgement. It is to be noted that the candidates who appear for NEET 2024 re-test will have their May 5 exam score discarded. Only the marks of their re-test, whether less or more, will be considered.

Will NEET UG 2024 Supreme Court judgement affect results of all students?

There is no confirmation so far but it is most likely that NEET UG results will be revised for all 23+ lakh candidates, not just these 1,563 candidates. It is because although the raw marks of all students will remain the same, the normalized percentile scores will be affected. As ranks are calculated from the percentile scores, the ranks of all candidates will also be affected due to the change in results of these 1,563 candidates. It can be expected that the revised results for all candidates will be out along with the re-test result on June 30, 2024.

NEET UG 2024 Controversy

Several petitions were filed against the National Testing Agency regarding the alleged paper leak case and the award of grace marks. As per the June 13 Supreme Court judgement on NEET UG 2024, the court has collectively dismissed the petitions that challenged the award of NEET 2024 grace marks. The grace marks issue in the petition filed by Physics Wallah CEO, Alakh Pandey, was closed but the case is kept pending for its other grievances.

The Supreme Court has also received petitions for the cancellation of the entire NEET UG 2024 examination for all 23+ lakh candidates. Owing to the allegation that a paper leak happened, the court has sought a response on NTA by July 8. As a paper leak challenges the sanctity of a medical entrance examination, the case is not dismissed. However, the court has not yet put a stay on the counselling process.

How did NTA award NEET Grace Marks 2024?

The National Testing Agency had decided to award grace marks to students to compensate for the loss of time. A few Writ Petitions were filed before the High Courts for loss of exam time at a few examination centres. As per the official statement released by the NTA, a Grievance Redressal Committee was formed which considered the grievances/representations based on factual reports of the functionaries and CCTV footage from concerned exam centres. To compensate for the loss of time, such candidates were compensated with compensatory marks. These grace marks were limited to the number of “unattempted questions”.

The loss of examination time was confirmed via the footages. Only such candidates were compensated with marks based on their answering efficiency and time lost. NEET 2024 grace maks were given as per the formula established by the Supreme Court, vide its judgment dated 13.06.2018 in W.P. 551 of 2018.

As many as 1,563 candidates were compensated for the loss of time. Physics Wallah CEO reportedly collected representations from over 20,000 candidates that showed as high as 70 to 80 marks were awarded as grace marks to at least 1,500 students.
