Applications Open for Newton Bhabha PhD Placement Programme 2019-20
The Department of Biotechnology has started with its application process for Newton Bhabha PhD Placement Programme 2019-20. The programme is open for the candidates pursuing Ph.D in Life Sciences and STEM as per the Priority Sectors of Newton Fund.
Applications to the Newton Bhabha PhD Placement programme 2019-20 are being accepted by the Department of Biotechnology from the Central Government’s Ministry of Science and Technology.
What is Newton Bhabha PhD Placement Programme?
Newton Bhabha PhD Placement Programme is a funding programme, wherein scholars or PhD students are provided with a short-term placement opportunity at Indian or UK Research or Higher Education Institutions. The funding is provided in a joint venture between the UK Government’s Newton Fund along with the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Department of Science and Technology (DST) and the Indian Higher Education Institutes. (Indian HEIs). The parties, who have displayed an interest in the UK Expression of Interest process to work as delivery partners.
The aim is to facilitate development in both economic situations and social welfare. They also aim to help in developing the innovation and research ability of the country so as to increase the “long-term sustainable growth”.
The placements for PhD will be based on the sectors and areas as defined by both India and the UK as important. Among the areas that will be focused upon include:
Sustainable Cities and Urbanisation
Public Health and Well-Being
Energy-Water-Food Nexus
Understanding the Oceans
Big Data
High-Value Manufacturing
The application in various STEM, Life Science subjects are also accepted and invited. The subjects include:

Note:
The Indian Higher Education Institutes have the ability to choose or consider subjects/topics that match the with the six priority areas as per Newton Bhabha Fund which can include Social Science, Fundamental Sciences and Physical Sciences.
Eligibility Criteria for Newton Bhabha PhD Placement Programme 2019-20
The PhD candidates who are interested in availing the fund will need to meet the eligibility criteria for Newton Bhabha PhD Placement Programme 2019.
INSPIRE PhD Senior Research Fellows of 2016 batch for STEM and Life Sciences subject
Non-INSPIRE PhD Scholars pursuing PhD programmes in the mid-second or third year of Life Sciences
Candidates will also need to clear CSIR/UGC-NET, ICAR-NET, BET, GATE, ICMR-NET
PhD Students in second or third year pursuing the programme from Indian HEIs
Women PhD Students
The above-mentioned categories of PhD student are eligible to send in their applications.
It is important to note that the students who apply for the programme should carry a valid passport before applying. It should also be noted that the PhD students currently pursuing their programmes will need to submit their PhD thesis after they complete the placements.

The Department of Science and Technology with the help of the British Council will be supporting a total of 45 PhD Scholars from both the countries in the fields of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) from INSPIRE Fellows. Meanwhile, the Department of Biotechnology will be supporting 35 PhD Scholars apart from INSPIRE fellows from both the countries in the field of Life Sciences.

The Public-funded Indian Higher Education will be supporting 90 PhD scholars from India from various disciplines who have selected subjects that align with the priority sectors of Newton Fund.
