NEXT to Become Operational Within Three Years, Students Come Up With Feedback
Union Health Minister confirmed that NEET PG will be scrapped only three years after the enactment of NMC Bill. NEXT will replace the NEET PG exam. Students come up with proposals on NEXT.
Over the past few days, there has been a lot of confusion prevailing over the applicability of the NEET PG exam for the academic session 2020-21. Giving clarity in this regard, Union Health Minister said that the NEXT (Exit Test) for MBBS students will be implemented three years after the enactment of the NMC Bill. NEXT will act as an entrance exam for admission to PG medical courses in India. With this clarification, it is sure that NEET PG will be conducted for PG medical admissions for the academic session 2020-21.
Indian Medical Association- Medical Students Network demands NEXT twice a year. They have put forward some proposals regarding the same to Central Government.
Proposal 1- MBBS Final Year Part 2 exam dates should be uniformed across all universities and colleges in India. This will help final year MBBS students to prepare for NEXT without any confusion.
Proposal 2- NEXT exam to be conducted twice a year that is in March and April.
Proposal 3- Candidates qualifying NEXT 1 should be given eligibility to pursue an internship.
Proposal 4- Candidates clearing NEXT 1 and internship should be given eligibility for NEXT 2 so that he/ she will not only be eligible for PG Medical Admission but also to practice medicine in India.
Proposal 5- NEXT 1 to be conducted in online mode only.
Proposal 6- If a student is a appearing for a NEXT exam twice the highest marks secured among two exams should be taken into consideration.
Proposal 7- For PG medical admissions only NEXT 1 score should be taken into consideration. The logic is that the chances of getting higher marks in NEXT 1 are high as compared to NEXT 2.
As per the NMC Bill, the NEXT exam will be a mandatory exam for obtaining a license to practice medicine in India. The NEXT exam, which will empower the MBBS graduates to practice medicine in India will also come into existence only three years after the enactment of the NMC Bill.
Lok Sabha has already passed the NMC Bill, and the Bill is tabled in Rajya Sabha for approval. Once the Bill gets approved from the Upper House of the Parliament, it will be sent to President of India for the final approval. The NMC Bill is expected to get consent from Rajya Sabha in few days, and Exit Test (NEXT) may come into effect from 2022.

The guidelines mentioned in NMC Bill, especially those pertaining to the implementation of NEXT did not go well with the Indian Medical Association (IMA), which has been demanding the government to roll back the idea.
