NHAI Signs MOU with IIT - Kharagpur
The MoU will facilitate the development of technology to construct Panelled Cement Concrete.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has agreed to sign up for a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with IIT Kharagpur for a research project related to Laboratory and Field Investigations on Paneled Cement Concrete Pavements for Highways. The duration of the project is three years. NHAI has paid 1.25 crore to the Institute for this purpose.

The highways in India are paved with Bituminous (Asphaltic Concrete) material which is produced from refineries. However, these highways are prone to damages which are caused by climatic conditions. So, frequent maintenance of these highways is creating problems. The Government of India approved construction of concrete pavements for all the major highways so that the constant maintenance work can be avoided.

The MoU will facilitate the development of technology to construct Panelled Cement Concrete. Any saving in design and construction with the help of new technology will entail huge investment and further save consumption of a substantial quantity of natural resources used for the production of cement and stone aggregates.
