NID designing Yoga outfit for 'International Yoga Day'

National Institute of Design (NID) has been commissioned by the AYUSH ministry, which is in charge of organizing the Union government's International Yoga Day event on (June 21) in New Delhi, to create 'yoga wear' that can be worn by all participants including prime minister Narendra Modi who is supposed to lead the event.

The AYUSH ministry has commissioned NID to design yoga wear for both men and women. Two designs have been sent for the AYUSH ministry's approval, taking into account the modesty and comfort provided by the attire.

Inmates of Sabarmati Central Jail, Ahmedabad will be conducting mass production of the yoga wear, which will include track-suits made of cotton-lycra mix.

“Many people had participated in the yoga event last year wearing clothes of their own choice, being unaware of appropriate clothing. Consequently, NID was given a contract by the AYUSH ministry to prepare the special yoga attire,” said a spokesperson of NID Gandhinagar.

“The designs had come from brainstorming with students, who considered all practical aspects and came up with the new yoga wear. When you are bending your body or stretching during yoga, clothes should not come in the way. We have tried to make the clothing loose at the crotch, under the arm and back areas. Besides, clothes have also been designed considering body shapes of men and women," added the spokesperson.

The institute has minutely examined body movements in yoga classes and made the special yoga wear taking into account joints of the human body, release points, and breathability.

“The yoga mats, which appear like 'Indian dari', are being prepared using cotton sliver. The idea behind deploying jail inmates in mass production was to help them earn their employment from behind prison bars, and support them in gaining earning skills,” added spokesperson further.
