NIRF 2017: Universities to be Ranked for Overall and Discipline-Specific Excellence
In the year 2016, the institutes were ranked on the basis of five parameters. These parameters will be used to rank the institutes this year, but some improvements have been made.
NIRF or National Institutional Ranking Framework will have unique features this year. NIRF was launched in the year 2016 by HRD Ministry to rank the top universities in the country. In the year 2017, the varsities will also be ranked according to their overall and discipline-specific excellence. However, the details relating to the data presented for checks, for all the varsities, will be published soon.
Prof. Surendra Prasad, one of the members of NIRF revealed that for smaller institutions, there would be only discipline-specific rank. On the other hand, the varsities will have to publish all the data which can be viewed by both stakeholders and the general public to avoid misrepresentation.

In the year 2016, the institutes were ranked basis five parameters. These parameters will be used to rank the institutes this year as well, but some improvements have been made. On the other hand, the categorization which was prevalent last year has been removed this year. As of now, the institutes which cater to a minimum student population are eligible for an overall rank. For certain disciplines, there will be discipline-specific rankings. It will help the institute to evaluate themselves on the basis of multiple ranks to improve their offerings in future.

All the participating institutes which are independent of their nature or discipline will be given a common overall rank this year. For achieving a common overall rank, the participating institutes should have the strength of at least 1,000 students. However, it will also be calculated as per approved intake. These institutes must be either a centrally funded–institution or university.
