Delhi University Ranking Dips Drastically - Know Why
Multiple factors played a role in Delhi University's dip in rank as per the 2019 NIRF Rankings. Budget allocation, lack of permanent faculties and quality of journals have been identified as the main reasons.
Delhi University has seen a notable fall in university rankings of 2019 National Institute Ranking Framework (NIRF) which were released yesterday by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD).
Whereas other universities in Delhi such as Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and Jamia Milia Islamia successfully held onto their 2 and 4 respectively in 2019 NIRF Rankings, the fall of Delhi University to 13 from previous year’s 7th Ranking is surely a matter of concern to the university council. The overall ranking in 2019 NIRF has also fallen to 20 from the last year ranking 14.
Experts suggest that ‘Emphasis on permanent faculty’ and ‘Budget Utilisation’ is the sector behind the fall of Delhi University in 2019 NIRF rankings. It has also failed to upscale the quality of research journals published.
Although in some parameters, the University of Delhi has done better than the previous year. But fall in the quality of research, professional practice & collaborative performance (R.P.C.) and teaching, learning & resources (T.L.R.) have fallen drastically which resulted in overall rank fall of Delhi University.

The NIRF website suggests some parameters on which the TLR level depends on. This includes ‘Quality of students including Ph.D. researchers,’ ‘faculty to student ratio by the emphasis on permanent faculty,’ ‘total budget sanctioned and utilisation’ and ‘combined metrics for faculties with Ph.D. (or equivalent) and experience.’
