National Institute of Technology, Surathkal (NIT-K) provides the students with pre placement offers where academic internships conducted during final year of courses are turning into job opportunities for some. Such students---- outperformed as interns are observed and offered jobs.
Priyanaka Singh, a final year MCA student of National Institute of Technology, Surathkal (NIT-K) is one such student who landed up with her dream job after a short term internship.
Students now dont have to wait for campus placements at the end of the year, they are provided with jobs even before they get their convocation certificate in hand.
According to Lakshman Nandagiri, professor incharge - Training and placement , NIT-K, Surathkal, PPO will soon replace conventional interview mode.
In 2013-14, 10 companies observed 32 students with an average package of Rs 11 lakhs, the number doubled in next academic year with 60 students being pre-placed in 14 companies with a pay package of Rs 12.2 lakhs. In the year 2015-16, till date 76 person from NIT-K are placed in 23 companies. "The number of students and companies are increasing year by year because most firms want best of best candidate and it is proved only during internships," adds Lakshman. The PPO is very much adopted in B-Schools hiring.
The b.tech students are provided with internships in their final semester for nearly two and half months and given live projects to work with.
While, M.Tech students have year-long internship in prestigious firms. "During these period company head keen fully observe candidate capabilities and on the other side a student will also test the water."
Moreover Lakshman says that a student is also given a chance to reject or accept an offer. If the students does not like the work culture, mind-set of people around or company profile. "After rejecting PPO, they join for regular campus placements," he says.
During the PPO, students are able to earn a stipend ranging from Rs 15,000 to Rs 40,000 both in IT and core industries.
