NIT Karnataka Commences its One-Year Long Diamond Jubilee Celebrations
NIT Karnataka has announced the beginning of its one-year celebration of completing 60-years of existence. A part of the celebrations, students will be encouraged to plant one tree each and nurture its growth for the entire duration of their degree.
The National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK) has begun its Diamond Jubilee celebrations from the 6th of August 2019. The celebrations will see the culmination of 60 different activities in different areas such as Sports, academics, cultural, ecology, open house, convocation along with many others. An alumni meet of both the ex-students of NIT Karnataka and Karnataka Regional Engineering College will also be held at as a part of the 60-year celebrations.
The Director of the NIT Karnataka, K Umamaheswar Rao had stated even though NIT Karnataka had completed only 17 years of existence since the college had been upgraded due to an Act passed in 2002, the Institute had started its services as an educational institution 60 years ago, under the alias of Karnataka Regional Engineering College. In the beginning, the engineering college begun with humble beginnings, offering a seating capacity of 250 students in the undergraduate courses at the college to now, where they accept over 6,000 students in all Undergraduate, postgraduate as well as doctoral programmes.

Sources state that the Diamond Jubilee celebrations will continue for an entire year, where they will conduct 60 different activities till 6th August 2020. The activities have been planned as per the interests of the stakeholders of the institute who have been a key part of the development of the institute.

One of the major activities that will be undertaken by the National Institute of Technology Karnataka, is UGC’s ‘One Student, One Tree’. According to sources, each of the 6,000 odd students studying under various programmes of the institute, will be given a sapling which the respective student will plant and nurture the growth of the sapling for the entire duration of their academic stay. Rao also stated that there will be 60 different varieties of saplings that are native to the place.
