After the closure of the classes because of clashes between local and outstation students at National Institute of Technology (NIT) campus in Srinagar, classes will resume again from 28 November, 2016 as normalcy returns slowly to the Kashmir Valley.

Following the 8th July killing of top militant Burhan Wani, the NIT Srinagar campus has been locked and the curfew was clamped across Kashmir. The institute was scheduled to reopen on 27 July, 2016 but the date was deferred to 3rd October, 2016. Now the institute is reopening on 28 November, 2016 finally.

While sharing this information, an official of NIT Srinagar said that the situation has improved significantly and there are no incidents of violence so far and hence the decision to reopen the campus of the University of Kashmir is also likely to be taken.

Those students who have lost two consecutive semesters had written to Union Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry requesting to accommodate them in another campus outside the valley or shift the campus out of Srinagar.

In April 2016, the campus witnessed skirmish between local and students from outside the state due to a cricket match between India and Pakistan. It drew widespread incidents of clashes in the valley between the security forces and the locals that forced the authority to shut the institute.

Now the incidents of stone pelting have minimised and normalcy is returning to the entire valley, finally. NIT administrators and officials of the Human Resouces Ministry are trying to reach out to parents of the students and assure them safety and security of their children as to join classes immediately.

On their arrangements to deal with the lost classes, an official of the institute said that they are planning to hold extra classes on off days and during the winter break. In the process, the entire syllabus will be covered.

What remains to be seen now is how the classes will be held in the chilling winter of Kashmir with limited facilities at the campus. Because of the closure of the NIT Srinagar, the final year students have been at the receiving end. Only two minor exams have been held till now and the final exam is to be held in November, 2016. The institute is yet to be functional, said a final year student.
