While speaking on the emphasis needed on engineering, technical, mathematics and science studies in India for growing human expertise, a NITI Aayog official has said that the higher education system in India is in grim and needs higher investment and reform operations. On the occasion of the release of ‘Emergence of STEM education in India’ which is a task force report, V. K. Saraswat, a NITI Aayog member questioned the quality of education of the undergraduate, Post Graduate and Ph.D. students. He held the shortcomings of Indian education system responsible for this.

He said that neglecting higher education is synonymous to neglecting the growth of the nation as higher education is the highest contributor to the growth of a nation. The transformation in the demography will only take place if the country puts more focus on the higher education system. He also expressed that the state of the higher education system in India is grim overall.

Saraswat, questioning the quality of education said that there has been a significant lack in the quality of the graduate, post-graduate and Ph.D. products even though they are coming out in large numbers.

Comparing with the government expenditure on education in China, Saraswat pointed out that only 4% of the GDP is dedicated to the education sector wholly. India spent 12.5 billion dollars on education from which, 4.5 billion was spent on higher education which is anything but sufficient. He informed that China is spending 565 billion dollars on education out of which, 145 billion dollars are spent on the higher education sector of the neighbouring country.
