Niti Aayog to Introduce New Medical Regulatory Draft Bill to Replace MCI

In order to streamline the regulatory framework of medical institutes of the country and replace the Medical Council of India or MCI, Niti Aayog is working on a draft bill. Under the new draft bill a National Medical Commission (NMC) will come up and the new draft bill will be placed for approval before the cabinet very soon.

Sharing the information, a government official said that Niti Aayog is working on the proposed National Medical Commission Bill and there will be a lot of changes in the medical education rules and regulations.

It was last year in 2016 when the Vice-Chairman of Niti Aayog, Arvind Panagariya headed a high-level committee that looked into the issue of poor regulations of medical education. The committee also proposed to replace MCI.

Other members that were included in the committee headed by Arvind Panagariya were -

  • P K Mishra, Additional Principal Secretary to Prime Minister
  • CEO Amitabh Kant, Niti Aayog CEO
  • ?Union Health Secretary

Once NMC is approved, it will become a regulatory body and the new body will take over all the roles and responsibilities of MCI. The new body will have people across sections of the society, that will include doctors and experts from their related fields so that they can lead the medical education to its new height and improve the quality of medical education at par with the global standard.

The Commission will have 19-20 member team which will be headed by a Chairman. They will serve for a tenure of 5 years. The members will be hailing from different field like law, education and economics. Four different boards that will come under the commission are -

  • Under Graduate Medical Board
  • Accreditation and Assessment Board
  • Board for registration of medical colleges
  • Post Graduate Medical Board
