NMC likely to extend MBBS internship cutoff date for NEET PG 2023
NEET PG 2023 internship deadline might be extended from March 31 to late 2023. A panel discussion was done by NMC officials regarding the same.
NEET PG 2023: The National Medical Commission (NMC) is considering an extension for the internship completion deadline after the NEET PG aspirants wrote to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Soon after the release of NEET PG 2023 notification on January 07, 2023, many aspirants had taken to social media and expressed concerns over the cutoff date for the internship completion. As per the notification, in order to be eligible for NEET PG 2023, candidates must complete their internship before March 31, 2023. However, due to the delayed academic schedules and busy healthcare system during the pandemic, around 40,000 to 50,000 students will become ineligible to appear for the entrance examination if this deadline is followed.
A panel discussion was done on this matter. A senior official of NBE said, as reported by The Hindu, “The internship deadline is decided by the NMC officials and they are likely to extend the cutoff date for the MBBS internship further. Once the extension order has been conveyed to us, we will issue a change in NEET PG 2023 bulletin accordingly.”
Further speaking to a senior NMC official, he said, “We will not take any step which will have a detrimental effect on the future of the students.”

Because of the pandemic, the start of the internship of students has experienced vast delays, leading to the late completion of their internship. The Federation of Resident Doctors’ Association (FORDA), India did a survey in 23 states of the country and as per the report, due to this deadline, more than 50% of the students will be rendered ineligible to appear for NEET PG 2023. The association has also written to the NMC as well, requesting an extension.
The president of FORDA, Aviral Mathur, said on the report, “The internship deadlines in most states vary from April to November 2023. For instance, in Bihar, the internship will end by August while in Chhattisgarh, this deadline is November,” he continued. “The pandemic has kept busy the entire health system of the country and thus, the students entered the health system late. Most of them were also posted in hospitals to fulfil the workforce shortage during the COVID-19 pandemic.”
