No Centralized Admission for PG Medical Courses at Gujarat University, Clarifies HC

The High Court of Gujarat disposed a petition, which objected the Gujarat University’s decision to give preference to the students of the varsity while granting admission to Post Graduate (PG) medical courses from the next academic session.

Earlier, nine students in the Gujarat High Court claiming the decision taken by Gujarat University is discriminatory to other students filed a petition in the HC and pointed that as per the ruling of Supreme Court as on September 22, 2016, the state governments should conduct admission to PG medical courses through centralized counseling. The admission should be granted to the candidates as per the score they secure in NEET-PG examination.

The students further claimed that the system of centralized counseling has been prevalent for NEET-UG and as per the judgment of Supreme Court, the admission to PG medical courses should be also done on the lines of NEET-UG.

On the other hand, the counsel representing Gujarat University indicated that 50% seats in PG medical courses are controlled by Gujarat University and the preference will be given to the students of GU over students from other universities. The admission policy of Gujarat University regarding 50% seats was prevalent even before the intervention of Supreme Court.

Therefore, the High Court confirmed that the same admission policy would be continued for the next academic session too. Gujarat University framed the rules regarding PG medical admissions on October 10, 2017. As per the rules of Gujarat University, students from other universities and colleges will get admission to PG medical courses in GU and affiliated colleges only if there are vacant seats.
