No Clarity on Funding for Women's Study Centres Yet
- UGC is the prime body which is responsible for funding and maintaining the standards of higher education in the country.
- Funding provisions for the women's study centres in colleges and universities will be in question after September end.
On Thursday, 24th August 2017, the University Grants Commission, also known as the UGC revealed that no such proposal has been put forward in order to restrict the funding for women's study centres in various colleges and universities.
The IAWS i.e. the Indian Association for Women's Studies showed their concern with respect to the future of more than 150 women specific study centres. Earlier, the nodal higher education authority had maintained the fact that funding for these centres will become uncertain from October 1 onwards.

The UGC secretary, Mr. P.K. Thakur reiterated that no proposal to cut off these funding mechanisms in place. He further added that the continuation of the schemes will depend on the review decision which is taken after 30th September 2017.

The primary responsibility of UGC is to take care of the provision of funds as well as determination, coordination and the complete maintenance of education quality standards in colleges and universities across the country. It is a statutory body of the central government.
