Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT-R) recently mandated that the Ph.D. students of the institute will not be able to work at IIT-R as faculty members.
It has been decided that the engineering institute will not employ or absorb its own students as teachers when they complete the course irrespective of the academic record they possess. The move has been taken to instead bring in the best faculty from all across the country as well as from abroad, for which the government has already given a nod. At present, there are only a handful of foreign faculty members at the institute.

Interestingly, one of the officials of the institute believes that hiring someone who has been a part of IIT Roorkee as a student for a faculty post is like marrying someone within the family!
IIT Roorkee director, Mr. Ajit Kumar Chaturvedi, on the other hand, revealed with the appointment of someone from the same institute is regarded as a regressive, rather than a progressive practice or strategy. This is because a person who belongs to the same college, he or she will not be able to gauge new ideas as their 'umbilical cord' will never be broken. Additionally, if that happens, the student will get guidance from his/her seniors and will never be able to develop an individuality of their own, no matter how good their research and academic record.
The premier engineering institute will, however, welcome B.Tech students from various specialisations to pursue Doctorate of Philosophy (Ph.D.) when they complete their graduation.
