A committee constituted by All India Council for Technical Education or AICTE will submit a report to HRD Ministry whether or not to conduct single engineering entrance exam in future. However, the Ministry of Human Resources and Development is not in favour of implementing a NEET-like single engineering entrance exam from 2018 onwards. According to sources, all Indian states will continue to conduct their own entrance examinations for admission to engineering courses, appart from accepting JEE scores. HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar clarified that the idea to implement single engineering entrance exam would not come into effect from 2018.

Is you keep aside the HRD Ministry's intention, the plan to implement single engineering entrance exam is still under review, and the committee constituted by AICTE is yet to submit its recommendations. The final decision can only be taken based on the recommendations made by the committee. It seems that the committee needs more time to formulate recommendations.

An official associated with HRD Ministry pointed that implementing NEET was easy, as there was not an oversupply in the market. There are more than 3,300 approved engineering institutes in India, and these institutes offer over 1.6 million engineering seats. According to statistics, only half of the engineering seats are being filled every year, he added.

Once the single engineering entrance exam is implemented, there will be no scope for multiple examinations conducted by various central, state government, and private agencies. Various private engineering institutes or deemed universities conduct separate entrance tests for engineering courses as of now.
