No Separate Entrance Test for Medical Courses in Kerala Says Chief Minister

The Government of Kerala has finally decided not to hold a separate entrance examination for medical courses from 2017. Similarly, the government will not conduct entrance examination for various professional courses other than engineering. The entrance examination for the admission to engineering courses will remain same.

From the year 2017, admission to Agriculture, Medical, AYUSH and Veterinary courses will be conducted as per the rank list published by National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET).

The central government made NEET mandatory for admission to medical courses in the previous academic session. However, some of the states were given relief which resulted in the admission process being administered as per state level examination.

The Cabinet of Kerala headed by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan took the decision and made NEET compulsory for admission not only to medical courses but also for professional courses too. The cabinet meeting took place on December 20, 2016.

According to sources, the notification for state-level engineering entrance examination will be released in a week. Currently, the change of name of the entrance examination, i.e. KEAM is underway, and separate prospectus will be prepared.

In the year 2013, the government of Kerala conducted admission to medical courses as per NEET. However, most of the private medical colleges and CMC Vellore questioned the admission process and filed petitions in the High Court. However, then Chief Justice Althamis Kabir nullified NEET which led to controversy.
