No University Till Now Has Set Up Mahatma Gandhi Chair Despite UGC Nod
- UGC has formulated a scheme for the establishment of chairs in higher education institutes and universities in the name of persons of eminence, Nobel Laureates for their outstanding contributions to the society.
University Grants Commissions (UGC) had formulated a scheme for the establishment of chairs in higher education institutes and universities in the name of persons of eminence, Nobel Laureates etc. for their outstanding contributions to the society.
Mahatma Gandhi chair is one of such chairs approved by the UGC in areas of non-violence, peace and national integration. However, a senior HRD Ministry official informed that they have not received any proposal in this regard from any university.

Many students are interested in Gandhian Studies and have also enrolled themselves in various undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes in this respective field.
According to the reports, over 419 students had enrolled themselves in the undergraduate programme in Gandhian studies for the 2017-18 academic year. Whereas for postgraduate and doctoral programmes, over 800 students had enrolled. A total of 17 students were awarded Ph.D degrees in Gandhian studies in 2018. The number of students who enrolled in these programmes in 2016-17 was as follows:
- Undergraduate:321
- Postgraduate:746
- M.Phil:67
- PhD: 113
