A group of outstation students studying at NIT Srinagar, after the violence broke out in July in strife-torn Kashmir Valley, have asked the government to move them out.

The institute has been locked down since the curfew was clamped across Kashmir after the July 8 killing of top militant Burhan Wani. Since then around 87 people have died and 10,000 injured in widespread clashes in Kashmir with tensions rising high.

Students from outside Kashmir say they fear to return back into the city as they find the city unsafe for them. Even their parents aren’t willing to send their son/daughter back to the institute. Earlier the campus also saw a scuffle between outstation and local students over a nationalism row involving a cricket match.

Several students say they have already lost two semesters. The delay in opening the institute will jeopardize their careers. They have written to the HRD ministry requesting that the NIT be shifted out of Srinagar or they be admitted into other campuses outside Kashmir.

More Details:

  • Already 2,600 pupils left Kashmir
  • Only 180 of the 2,800 students are present on campus
  • Institute was supposed to open on July 27 which was later extended to October 3rd

Now the institute and HRD ministry are looking at ways to reach out to the parents of these students. They are also trying to persuade the parents to send their children to join classes.

The registrar of NIT Srinagar says that the matter will be discussed at the meeting of the board of governors (BoG) of the NIT on 4th October, where HRD officials will also join. All the future decisions will be taken in the meeting.

Final year students are affected badly as few classes have taken place this year. Even placements are badly hit. No company is willing to come to Srinagar.

While the institute plans to hold extra classes and remove the winter break to finish course work, students are not convinced. They are not ready to come to the campus in the chilling cold without any facilities in the campus. An official of the institute says that they have already uploaded the entire syllabus on the website. Now the students would be able to study on their own.
