Now Take Entrance Exam for Admission to Agriculture Courses

Candidates interested in pursuing agricultural courses in the state of Maharashtra will now have to register and appear for the Maharashtra Technical Common Entrance Test (MHT CET) to take admission in agriculture courses.

The decision has been taken by Maharashtra Council of Agricultural Education and Research (MCAER) with an objective to regulate the admission procedure in agriculture colleges of Maharashtra. Candidates appearing for 2018-19 session will have sit for the exam before taking admission in the colleges offering agriculture courses.

Earlier, the eligibility criteria for agriculture courses was limited to the marks scored by the candidates in 12th board exam but from this year candidates will have to score well in MHT CET as well to fall under the eligibility room of agriculture colleges.

National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) or Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) will also be considered as admission criteria to the agriculture courses. Director of MCAER, Harihar Kausadikar said that the candidates with scores of NEET, JEE and MHT CET can apply for agriculture courses. 70% weightage has been assigned to the above mentioned exams and 30% to 12th marks. For admission, marks of biology and mathematics scored in MHT CET will be considered.

Degree obtained in agricultural engineering, horticulture, forestry, biotechnology, home or community science, food technology, sericulture, food nutrition and dietetics and agriculture will be treated same as other professional courses, like engineering and medicine.

Harihar added that only the criteria for admission has changed but the central admission process is same as before. On the other hand, state CET Cell officials have denied any information about MCAER and have also said that necessary changes will be made once they get confirmation.
