OBC Students Demand Reservation in BBAU

It seems that reservation is the flavour of the season. Not just the Jat uprising in Haryana for reservation, politics has taken centre stage at Baba Saheb Bhimrao Ambedkar Law College, Lucknow, when a month ago two Dalit students shouted anti-Modi slogans in front of the Prime Minister during the convocation on January 22. Now there is another turn in campus politics of BBAU as OBC students want reservation in the university. For this, they are set to stage a massive protest at the university's central library in the 3rd week of February.

According to President of the university's Ambedkar Vishwavidyalaya Chhatra Sangathan (AVCS), Ratnesh Chaudhary, the students demanding reservation have written letters to the Prime Minister, President, Vice-President, and a number of MPs and MLAs, and have sent more than 250 mails to Prime Minister demanding 27% reservation for OBC students.

Recently Dalit students have accused “upper caste“ teachers of discrimination against them. While OBC students alleged that Dalit students boycott Hindu festivals, particularly Saraswati Puja on campus, the latter alleged that general category and OBC students are awarded more marks than Dalit students.

For a country that is in urgent need of forward thinking people, these singular protests cause a dent to the overall progress system. As students, the one and only focus that should be on their minds is how to succeed in career and do well in life. Instead, today's youth are spending the most important years of their lives running after something, that may or may not add any value to their life, overall.
