'Older IITs are Not Competing Institutes but Complementary Ones': New Director of IIT Bhilai

Prof. Rajat Moona, new Director of Indian Institute of Technology, Bhilai indicated that any newly formed IIT would take the time to consolidate itself. He indicated that older IITs in the country are not to be seen as competing institutes but complementary ones. He expressed that he is aware of the battle of perception which he is going to face initially. IIT-Bhilai is a newly formed institution, and there are various challenges to consolidate the institute.

Currently, he is the Director of Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), Pune. Under his leadership, various projects were implemented which include Electoral Roll Management System and National Super Computer Mission (NSCM). Both these projects are the prestigious ones of the central government.

The total budget of NSCM is Rs. 4,500 crore and the project is in execution stage currently. Several educational institutions in the country will get a super computer through this project, and it will be a great achievement for the country. Through this project, around 50 Param Shawak were developed which enable affordable supercomputing for small organisations and industries.

Currently, C-DAC is also executing ‘Electronic transmitted postal balled system' which will help defence forces. It is a grand project, and it was tried practically during the by-elections in Pondicherry. Now, the system will be used in assembly elections which are going to take place in five states. Through this system, the defence personnel will be able to log in real time, print ballots and can send it by post.

Prof. Moona was an alumnus of Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur and he also worked as a professor for many years.
