On-Screen System Behind the Delay in MU Results? SPPU Comes to Aid!
- MU failed to deliver the results before the July 31 deadline set by the Governor and Chancellor.
- On-screen system for assessment of final year answer sheets has caused the delay.
- MU said that the results will be announced on August 5.
The Mumbai University (MU) failed to deliver the results before the July 31 deadline set by the Governor and Chancellor of the University Vidyasagar Rao. In 2017, the university had implemented an on-screen assessment system for evaluating final year papers.
According to reports, this on-screen system for assessment of final year answer sheets was implemented in a haste, therefore, causing delay in declaration of results. MU has declared the results for as few as 160 exams so far out of a total of 477 exams that were conducted in 2017.
MU not only failed to deliver the result within the 45-day deadline set by the Maharashtra Public Universities Act but also failed to deliver the results before the second deadline, i.e. July 31.
Considering the confusion and chaos that has been created by the delay of results, the university has appealed the neighbouring universities to lend staff members in order to declare the results as soon as possible.
One of the universities that have come up to help the Mumbai University is the Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) that has dedicated up to 60 teachers from different departments and 40 computers to help the university to speed up the results.
Although MU had requested for 300 teachers, SPPU could spare only 60 due to its own work pressure. Teachers of SPPU who have been helping MU have also stated that the new evaluation system is very complex and is the reason why the delay is taking place.

SPPU Vice-Chancellor, N R Karmalkar, informed that one has to scan the answer sheets and then analyse it, whereas, the marks are recorded separately. This lengthy process has caused the delay, he added.
He also said that the SPPU teachers had estimated that they will be able to correct at least 1000 copies on the first day. However, this target was not achieved as the teachers were unable to load the heavy data fast enough.
Students are quite distressed due to the delay in results as they had applied for jobs, PG courses, study abroad programmes, etc. Without results, their applications and job letters have been stopped midway. Many of them are worried that they might lose a year if the results are not declared soon.
