Orphans Attempting Competitive Exams in Maharashtra to Come under Separate Category
- Maharashtra government has decided to come up with a law that creates a separate category for orphans appearing for competitive exams.
- CM of Maharashtra, Mr. Devendra Fadnavis gave clarification in this regard.
Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Mr. Devendra Fadnavis announced that the state government is planning to frame a law for the creation of a separate category for orphans appearing for different competitive exams. After taking the situation of a girl who cleared Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) exam into consideration, the state government is looking for possibilities to create a separate category for orphans.

Explaining the situation of the girl who cleared MPSC exam, Mr. Devendra Fadnavis said that the girl had met him and exhorted that she was unable to make it to merit list, as she was considered for the job under General Category. She would have been shortlisted for the appointment if she were a reserved category candidate. The major issue with the girl was that she is an orphan and didn't know her caste. Therefore, there is a need to create a separate category for orphans to regulate such kind of issues in future, he added.

The idea to create a separate category for orphans is one of the best initiatives of Maharashtra government. However, the law is yet to be framed and it might take some more months for the law to come into force. If a separate category were created as per the plan, it would be helpful for thousands of orphan students in Maharashtra. In all, these students will have a proper representation and identity. The state government is also taking various steps to improve quality education.
