Panjab University to Award E-Degrees

Panjab University will award e-degrees from the next academic session i.e., 2018-19. Similarly, migration certificates, Marksheets and diplomas will be made available through an online portal, confirmed by the varsity officials. Even though the varsity is planning to introduce such digital initiatives, it is still lagging in providing basic services like online transcript evaluation.

Panjab University has already signed a legal document with NAD (National Academic Depository) for providing e-degrees. A meeting took place in January 2018 and the varsity had decided to provide NAD with required data. The varsity has created NAD Cell on the premises of PU, as well as, affiliated institutes in Chandigarh and Punjab.

NAD is highly relevant and important since it is an online storehouse for all academic awards conferred by the academic institutions. Any student can become a member of NAD, and a Unique ID is provided to each member.

Panjab University is hoping to implement the new system from 2018-19. The government has set 2019 as the deadline. Until 2019, the government will not charge students for the digital inclusion of academic certificates.

Initially, Panjab University will award e-degrees for PG and Ph.D courses, and the new systems will be implemented for UG and other courses soon.

The officials of Panjab University confirmed that the procedure for obtaining mark sheets and associated documents are manual. Students can only download the application form for obtaining mark sheets and others from the official website and there is no online application process. Other universities in the state have online application system for acquiring transcripts.

At Panjab University, the system of acquiring transcripts is a long process. Students will have to download the application, fill it and deposit Rs. 150 in the concerned bank. Then, the students will have to affix the receipt and submit the application form to the Certificate Cell of the varsity. The varsity will charge Rs. 500 per certificate. Students will receive their certificates by post. Even though the process is cheaper, students claim the existing system also a slow and complicated process. Many students are highly disappointed with the existing system and hoping for a revamp.
