Sankalp Trust has filed a petition in the Supreme Court to fill 5,000 vacant MBBS/BDS seats in various private medical and dental colleges across the country for the academic session 2016-17. The trust has pleaded before the court to fill the vacant seats through centralised counselling and by NEET ranks. The apex court will hear the plea on October 28, 2016.

Recently, parents also decided to file a plea in SC as most of their children are yet to join a college. They mentioned that students with better NEET ranks are still waiting to join a college. They felt that most of the private medical colleges are following the policy of ‘first come first serve’ while conducting the admissions. The admissions shall be conducted as per NEET ranks which, unfortunately, the colleges are not following. So, the parents decided to approach SC for ‘conditional extension’.

The deadline for medical admissions was closed on October 7, 2016. Recently, Directorate of Medical Education (DMER) approached the apex court for the extension of date of admissions. However, the SC did not give a nod for an extension. Pravin Singhare, director of DMER mentioned that there are only six MBBS seats that are vacant in government medical colleges and all the BDS seats have been filled.

Director of DMER extended his support to the parents regarding the matter. However, Sankalp Trust has filed a petition, and the parents will decide whether to approach SC depending on the step that will be taken by SC on October 28, 2016.
