275 PG Diploma Medical Seats to be Converted to Degree Seats
A decision has been taken by the MCI to convert 275 PG medical seats across Maharashtra into three-year MD or MS seats. This means that roughly 2,120 seats in colleges across the country have the possibility of being converted from diploma to degree.
19 medical colleges offering PG medical courses across Maharashtra have been allowed to convert 275 diploma seats into three-year MD or MS seats for 2019-20. This decision was taken by the MDI and was announced through a circular issued last week. This means that 2,120 seats in colleges across the country have the possibility of being converted from diploma seats to degree seats.
Medical Colleges in Tamil Nadu and Medical Colleges in Karnataka have the most seats offering Post Graduate Diploma in Medical Courses. The major chunk of PG Diploma courses in Medical stream is in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Maharashtra with 470, 461 and 257 seats respectively. Medical colleges in Maharashtra which have the option of seat conversion are GS Medical College and King Edward VII Memorial Hospital in Parel with 30 seats, Mahatma Gandhi Memorial College in Navi Mumbai (10), Mahatma Gandhi Memorial College, Wardha (15), Government Medical College in Nagpur (30). Others are Grant Medical College and JJ Group of Hospitals in Byculla with 33 seats.

The circular also states that the application of conversion will depend on the approval of the University the college or institute is affiliated with. The colleges will have to apply individually. The state-based PG medical institutes are waiting for an official confirmation from the MCI before going ahead for the approval from the affiliated university. Once the MCI approval is in place, the university will not require much time to clear the approval.
