PG Medical Seats to Increase in 2020
The Medical Council of India has decided to increase the seats in the PG Medical courses since the introduction of the 10% EWS quota during the admission process. Medical Institutes will have to ensure that they meet the eligibility criteria and then apply for adding more seats under the EWS scheme.
In one of the many recent changes that have been brought in by the Medical Council of India (MCI), the latest change has been a proposal to increase the PG medical seats in all the medical seats of India. The MCI had recently brought in another change where the seat reservation percentage had been increased to 10%, which will be applicable from the next academic year.
The 10% quota for the economically weaker sections (EWS) was brought in by the government this which reduce the number of seats that are available for the candidates belonging to the general or the unreserved category. This has brought disagreement and agitation among the students. This agitation has forced the board of governors from the MCI have made a decision to increase the number of seats in the PG medical courses. These changes in the number of seats will be applicable from the next academic year, i.e. 2019-20.
In a notification provided by the Medical Council of India, it stated that the government medical colleges have been requested to send in their proposals for the PG medical seats with the implementation of the new EWS scheme. The colleges will have to consult their respective Directorates of Medical Education or DMEs for the implementation of the EWS scheme that has been brought in by the government and any further proposals regarding the PG medical seats. The notification has also provided the colleges with the format of the proposals that they will need to follow for the application process of the same.
The Medical Council of India is all set to add more seats to the PG medical courses in the medical institutes in India, they have asked the institutes for a detailed report for the inclusion of more seats in the PG medical courses.
According to the notification published by the MCI, the institutes who wish to increase the seats, they will first need to be eligible for the same. To be eligible, the institutes will have to work on increasing facilities required by the student during their academic growth in the institute. Facilities such as training, teaching, faculty and beds must increase as well.
However, the notification has been released quite close to the beginning of the next academic year, hence making the required changes to be eligible for the increase in the seats in PG medical courses will be difficult or even impossible to a certain extent.

In a statement made by one of the aspiring PG medical candidates said that it is even more difficult for the students to get through the open category PG Medical seats since the implementation of the 10% EWS category and the 16% Socially and Economically Backward Classes (SEBC). This has resulted in fewer seats on offer to the candidates belonging to the open category. He further added that increasing the number of seats would result in lesser competition among the general category students.
