PGI Introduces Coding System for Lab Tests
The Sanjay Gandhi Institute of Postgraduate Sciences (SGPGIMS) launched the system of bar-code for pathological samples and it will be extended to all
The Sanjay Gandhi Institute of Postgraduate Sciences (SGPGIMS) launched the system of bar-code for pathological samples and it will be extended to all testing labs of the institute.
With the beginning of coding system, interchanging of collected samples is less likely as it provides a unique identity to every sample collected from patients. Also, the time taken in providing reports to patients is likely to come down with the implementation of the system.
Under the new system, blood samples collected from patients will bear a unique bar-code. This code links the identity of every patient who comes for blood test with registration number. Joint director of the SGPGIMS Dr Uttam Singh considers the bar-coding system advantageous as it shortens the time for providing reports.
Also, chances of intermixing of a blood sample with another, though bleak, will drastically come down with the new system in place.Dr Singh added that a considerable amount had been spent to make the system operational. “Not only new equipment have been procured, the recruitment of contractual staff has also been made to run the new system effectively,” added the joint director.
