Ph. D Start-up Incubators by IIT Delhi

India’s premiere technology institute, the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (IIT-D) has initiated the process to set up a Ph. D start-up incubator to encourage research in advanced computational systems & other deep-technologies.

The target is to incubate minimum 20 ideas in the initial year of its inception, said Mr. V Ramgopal Rao – Director, IIT Delhi. The incubator is designed for candidates who have completed their Ph. D’s and are looking at innovations in harnessing deep-technologies. Participants of the incubator will be encouraged to do research & innovative work in advanced computational systems like:

• Data Sciences
• Artificial Intelligence
• Block Chain technologies & others

This revolutionary incubator will be activated from the Sonepat campus of IIT Delhi. Emphasizing on the uniqueness of the start-up incubator, MD of Foundation For Innovation And Technology Transfer (FITT), Mr. Anil Wali said that objective will be to come up with viable business plan that initiates innovation in the field of deep technology.

Application & Selection Process of Start-up Incubator by IIT-D:

• Application open on a national level to Ph. D candidates
• IIT-D will follow a two-stage screening process
• Innovation & research in deep-technology experience will be an added advantage

What will the IIT-D Start-Up Business Incubator do?

• Help build prototypes
• Demonstrate the prototypes

IIT Delhi was granted “Institutions of Eminence” status by the HRD Ministry on July 10, 2018, along with two other IIT’s. Jio Institute, which is yet to be formed was also given the prestigious status by the ministry. IIT Delhi plans to invest Rs. 1000 crores over a period of 5 years that will be granted to them by the HRD Ministry as part of the Institutions of Eminence grant. Of course, IIT-D will facilitate this amount with internal revenue generations through R&D grants and other mechanisms.

IIT-Delhi plans to raise another Rs. 1500 crores or so in the next 5 years, so the cumulative amount spent on this project will be Rs. 2500 crores approximately. This amount will be used in building infrastructure, enhancing research facilities and outreach.

There is a technology park already in place in the IIT Delhi Sonepat campus and the IIT-Delhi campus will also see one coming up in the immediate future.

A part of this grant will also be used Diploma programmes and industry sponsored Masters and Ph. D programmes. To encourage global diversity, the institute will also invite foreign students and teaching faculty through fellowships and assistantships.

In addition, IIT Delhi aims to partner with foreign universities in Taiwan, Canada and Australia to foster this initiative.
