The Pharmacy Council of India with the approval of the Union Health Ministry has released a gazette notification for the creation of Clinical Pharmacists posts in all hospitals and has also defined the roles and responsibilities of Clinical Pharmacists in a hospital/ drug store setting.
The PCI in its gazette notification amended the Pharmacy Practice Regulations, 2015 as Pharmacy Practice (Amendment) Regulations, 2021, and defined the duty of clinical pharmacists.Pharma.D graduates have been recognised as Clinical Pharmacists by the Pharmacy Council of India. The notification essentially ensures clinical pharmacists’ posts are created in hospitals and now it is up to the Centre and State governments to implement in hospitals.
Dr Sai Kumar Katam, National President of Doctor of Pharmacy Association, India informed that this has been a long-pending demand from the Pharm.D graduates for the creation of this cadre. Clinical Pharmacists have specialised knowledge and expertise in the use of medication. This makes them uniquely positioned in the healthcare system to help patients with the appropriate medication use, reduce medication relation problems, and also improve health outcomes.
The role of Clinical Pharmacists provides information and advice related to drug interactions, side effects, dosage and proper medication, storage to patients, physicians, dentists, and other healthcare workers. They also perform a regular evaluation on all usage and dosage of drugs, ensure the absence of reactions
