Ph.D. Degree Should Aim to Promote Innovation: MoS, MHRD
While addressing the audience at NIT Mangalore, Satyapal Singh talked about the importance of Ph.D. According to him, they should focus on innovation and research and not just be imparting degrees to students.
Satyapal Singh, Ministry of Human Resource Development and Ministry of Water Methods, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation addressed the audience at the National Institute of Technology, Mangalore, during the inaugural ceremony of e-library and other facilities.
While addressing the audience, he explained that the main aim of MHRD to propose 20 institutions and 10 private as Institution of Eminence (IoE). The main idea behind such initiatives is that no institution in the country matches the international standards. With the help of the IoE tag, the government wants to develop such institutions that meet the international benchmarks.

He also expressed his view about standards of Ph.D. in India. According to him, Ph.D. in India only offers candidates with degrees and nothing else. We should focus on providing students with an overall experience of innovation and research. He stressed on the fact that Ph.D. is just not about rewarding degrees but should lead to innovation and broaden their horizons.
As per him, to meet the international standards, one has to innovate ideas and there is a major need of multidisciplinary studies and interdisciplinary learning as in coming days all the technologies across the globe are going to merge.

Meanwhile, he also informed that to stop brain-drain, the government has introduced the Prime Minister Research Fellowship Programme. The enrolled students in the fellowship programme will get a remuneration of Rs. 70,000- Rs. 80,000 and will also be provided with seed money of Rs. 2 lakh.
