Ph.D Scholars from IITs and IISc to Get Rs. 70,000 Monthly Fellowship
- Higher Education Secretary, Mr. Kewal Kumar Sharma, confirmed the news regarding the fellowship scheme.
- Mr. Sharma clarified that students who graduate from IITs, NITs and IIITs will get a fellowship of Rs. 70,000 if they do their Ph.Ds either in IIT or IISc.
The Central Government is all set to grant Rs. 70,000 as a monthly fellowship to over 2,000 Ph.D. scholars across Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and Indian Institute of Science (IISc). These scholars will receive a fellowship for five years. Higher Education Secretary, Mr. Kewal Kumar Sharma, gave the confirmation while addressing at the 67th Foundation Day celebrations of Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur.
Mr. Sharma clarified that students who graduate from IITs, NITs and IIITs will get a fellowship of Rs. 70,000 if they do their Ph.Ds either in IIT or Indian Institute of Science (IISc). Currently, researchers are receiving a monthly scholarship of Rs. 25,000 in Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).

According to the official data published by Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, Ph.D. scholars receive Rs. 25,000 per month as scholarship during the initial two years. After the completion of first two years of fellowship, the scholarship/ fellowship amount will be enhanced to Rs. 28,000 per month depending on the receipt of satisfactory report on presentation of Progress Seminar.
Earlier, with an objective to retain Indian talent in the country and promote higher education, the Ministry of Human Resource and Development proposed Rs. 75,000 as fellowship per month under PM’s Research Fellowship Programme. According to HRD Ministry, the fellowship amount should be disbursed only to selected candidates.

As of now, the government is ready to grant Rs. 70,000 as fellowship per month to 2,000 Ph.D. scholars. The Finance Ministry has already approved the Draft Proposal regarding the fellowship scheme. The Union Cabinet is yet to approve the Draft Proposal. The government will implement the fellowship scheme in the next academic session.
