PM Modi Inaugurates Supercomputer ‘Param Shivay’ at IIT BHU

On February 19, 2019, Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated ‘Param Shivay’ – A Supercomputer at IIT BHU (Varanasi). The capacity of Supercomputer built at IIT BHU is 833 teraflop. National Supercomputer Mission (NSM) built Param Shivay at the cost of Rs. 32.5 crore at IIT BHU. Apart from launching Param Shivay at IIT BHU, PM Modi released a postal stamp on the Centenary Year of IIT BHU.

Director of IIT BHU, Professor Pramod Kumar Jain revealed that National Supercomputer Mission is a significant initiative of the Indian government. NSM has been playing a vital role in keeping India as a dominant country in the area of supercomputing. NSM also supports the vision of government’s ‘Make in India’ and ‘Digital India’ initiatives, he added.

Through NSM initiative, C-DAC (Centre for Development of Advanced Computing) has developed the first Supercomputer of India – Param Shivay with a capacity of 823-teraflop.

The supercomputer will benefit the research students, scientists, and faculty members of IIT BHU, nearby colleges and universities. On the other hand, students of Navodaya Vidyalaya will be familiarised with the basic concepts of supercomputing. The supercomputer will also address relevant social issues such as health, traffic management and irrigation schemes.

With the help of Param Shivay, indigenous supercomputer software will be developed in different scientific areas. At the same time, modelling and simulation will be applied in diverse areas such as information collection, macro-data analytics, search astrophysics, disaster simulation & management, finance, seismic analysis, space engineering, weather forecasting and climate assessment.
