Political Parties Urge Centre to Exempt Puducherry from NEET

Because of NEET they would be no CENTAC admission by the Government of Puducherry from the next academic session, i.e., 2017-18.

Representatives of various political parties who are also the members of NEET Opposition Action Committee have urged the central government to exempt Puducherry from National Eligibility cum Entrance Test or NEET which is conducted for the admission to BDS/ MBBS course.

R. Vishwanathan, former MLA and Secretary of CPI in a memorandum to Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy stated that there are 1,200 medical seats in Puducherry and out of them, 400 seats were filled by the Centralised Admission Committee. The practice was prevalent for many years, and the selection was based on the marks scored by the students in the higher secondary examination.

He further explained that because of NEET they would be no role for CENTAC to play in the admissions by the Government of Puducherry from the next academic session, i.e., 2017-18. He expressed his concern over the fact that NEET has snatched away the rights of the state government in MBBS admission in the name of coordination of standards and adoption of the minimum standard for BDS/MBBS.

He stated that students would face hardships due to the proposed NEET examination as they follow the syllabus prescribed by the state government. He claimed that NEET is CBSE centric and the questions will be based on the topics of CBSE syllabus, and it is not fair to implement NEET as most of the states do not follow CBSE syllabus.

Therefore, various political parties and leaders urged the Central Government to exempt Puducherry from NEET.
